Since I was very young, I was always fascinated by things that run on electricity. When relatives got computers, I knew it would be "my thing" ‐ I have a natural affinity and understanding for how they work.
I got my first exposure to BASIC about the same time I started learning how to ride a bicycle. My uncle had an old Atari with a cassette deck, and I remember "Mike's Funny Man" being loaded from a tape, and it had me hooked!
Since then, I have learned at least 12 languages (not counting various shell scripting languages), and I maintain professional-level fluency in about half of them.
As I progressed into high school in the early 1990s, I realized the great importance of inter-device communication and chose to make it my life's work. Combined with the development skill I was beginning to hone, this made me a "young pioneer" as the Internet was beginning to become mainstream.
I followed through with my "IRC Education," learning as much as I could from chat rooms and the experts who built and sponsored them, until I became one of their number.
